In today’s dynamic digital era, the entrepreneurial landscape is undergoing a profound transformation. SME South Africa’s latest event, themed The New Age of Digital Entrepreneurs, convened thought leaders and industry experts from diverse sectors to examine how innovation, technology, and strategic partnerships are reshaping the entrepreneurial journey.
The event featured distinguished panellists, including Tania Kruger from MasterCard and Kgodiragetse Mogajane of Delivery Ka Speed SA, who provided valuable insights into the critical role of digital transformation in fostering growth, financial inclusion, and customer-centric solutions. According to Gcina Madonsela, Business Development Executive at SME South Africa, the event explored how technology was redefining small business dynamics.
“The discussion unlocked endless opportunities for growth, innovation, and success through case studies. It catered to both seasoned entrepreneurs and those just starting out. As businesses look to the future, the focus remains on leveraging digital tools to thrive in a global economy,” said Madonsela.
Addressing Township Delivery Challenges
Mogajane highlighted the unique challenges faced by township-based entrepreneurs, such as inaccurate mapping and longer delivery times. “Townships are often far from economic centres. Maps are sometimes inaccurate, making it hard to reach destinations,” he said.
Mogajane also noted that township residents typically paid higher delivery costs. He emphasised that e-commerce was a game-changer: “When we started, we used WhatsApp for orders – it was effective for most township residents. Later, we transitioned to an app with integrated payment systems. Currently, only 6% of shopping in South Africa happens online, generating a turnover of approximately R71 billion.”
Integrated Digital Solutions for SMEs
Kruger stressed the importance of integrated digital solutions. “SMEs are overwhelmed with choice and need solutions that match the consumer experience. Our research shows that 51% of SMEs are already using digital services,” she said. Kruger also discussed the launch of MasterCard’s Pay by QR Code, a solution enabling businesses to link payments to bank accounts via a QR code.
“This tool allows consumers to make cashless payments by scanning a QR code with their phones. In Nigeria, we’ve introduced a QR code linked to physical business debit cards, making digital payments even more accessible,” she explained. Kruger further highlighted past efforts, such as Standard Bank’s Simply Blue platform, developed in collaboration with Google, to help SMEs expand their digital reach.
Cybersecurity: A Growing Concern
Refilwe Matanda, manager of products and solutions in cyber and intelligence at MasterCard, underscored the importance of cybersecurity for businesses of all sizes. “Cybercrime is a universal threat. To protect yourself, understand your vulnerabilities. Cybercriminals are opportunists, and everyone is at risk. Be cautious with how you use your devices,” warned Matanda.
The event showcased how digital innovation was driving progress and reshaping the entrepreneurial ecosystem, offering new tools and strategies to empower businesses across South Africa.
