Many of us have fond memories of enterprising ladies who were easily identifiable by their natty dress style and colourful brochures who sold Avon and Justine beauty products. These micro-entrepreneurs embodied the brand, exuded elegance and confidence and helped to make Avon and Justine skincare products household names in many communities.
Since its inception some 135 years ago, Avon has been synonymous with a direct selling business model that is interactive, and relationship-based. The primary reason why the company opted for this model was to give women the earnings opportunity and enable them to reap the benefits of the growth of the beauty and personal care industry.
“The role of women in the skincare and personal care industry has always been confined to consumption. Avon turned this on its head when it gave women the opportunity to become their own bosses and to earn a decent living selling Avon products. This might sound common place now for women to generate their own income, but this idea of giving women the means to become financially independent was very radical at a time when they were not even allowed to vote,” says Mafahle Mareletse, Managing Director for Avon Justine Turkey, Middle East & Africa.
As a company for women, Avon always believed that empowering women is empowering communities.
Mareletse says empowering women by giving them the opportunity to generate an income has multi-pronged benefits: firstly it fosters economic independence and lessens women’s dependence on abusive spouses. Secondly, empowering women to generate their own income has multiplier effects as the benefits flow not only to them but to everyone around them.
Thirdly, empowering women benefits the economy and contributes to the growth of the trillion-dollar economy. “We believe in the mantra that no country can ever truly flourish if it stifles the potential of its women and deprives itself of the contributions of half its citizens,” says Mareletse.
